How we check
Plaindial answers one question: will this simple phone make calls, send texts and use data on my network now 3G has gone? We only say "works" when we can point to a source.
What the four answers mean
- Works A network list, the network selling the phone, the maker, or a specific owner report says it works. Also when a network keeps 2G for calls with no switch-off date announced (Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Movistar and Vodafone in Spain) and the phone has those 2G bands plus matching 4G bands for data.
- Works with caveats It works, but with a catch. Most often: calls fall back to 2G or 3G because nobody has confirmed 4G Calling on that network, and that older network has a switch-off date (for example 2028 in Germany, December 2027 for KPN, 2029 for EE and O2). In France, where 2G is closing now, calls fall back to 3G until the end of 2028 or 2029.
- Doesn't work A source says it isn't compatible, or the phone physically can't connect: a 2G-only phone on a network without 2G (Three UK, Odido) or where 2G is closing within weeks (France), no matching bands, or no 4G Calling where there's nothing to fall back to.
- Unknown We couldn't verify it. We'd rather say so than guess. We don't make separate pages for unknown pairings.
Where the facts come from
- Network pages: Three's device support pages (which state "VoLTE (4G calling in UK)"), Vodafone UK's phone shop and device guides, EE and O2 help pages, VodafoneThree and GOV.UK on 2G switch-off dates, ANACOM and the Portuguese networks on 3G and 2G.
- Elsewhere in Europe: each network's own 2G/3G switch-off pages, plus the regulators (Bundesnetzagentur, Arcep, ACM, ComReg, AGCOM) and specialist press where a network hasn't published its own page. Free's and Orange's VoLTE phone lists in France, and Bouygues Telecom's 2G switch-off page.
- Network 4G bands from Wikipedia's list of LTE networks in Europe, which cites the regulators' licence data. We only use them to say whether 4G data should work.
- Maker spec sheets and support pages (HMD's VoLTE-verified product list, Light, Punkt, Mudita, Doro, Unihertz).
- GSMArena for 2G, 3G and 4G bands (3G matters now in France, the Netherlands and Italy).
- Owner reports from r/dumbphones, r/LightPhone, r/Punkt, Mudita's forum, ISPreview readers and our own report form. We say when a status rests on owner reports.
Why "supports VoLTE" isn't enough
4G Calling only works when the network has set up a profile for that phone. A phone can do VoLTE on Vodafone and not on O2, or on O2 Pay monthly but not on a Pay as you go SIM. That's why we track each phone and network pair separately.
Smaller networks
UK: giffgaff uses O2, Tesco Mobile uses O2, Sky Mobile uses O2, SMARTY uses Three, iD Mobile uses Three, VOXI uses Vodafone UK, Lebara uses Vodafone UK, BT Mobile uses EE. Ireland: GoMo uses Eir, Lyca Mobile uses Eir, Clear Mobile uses Vodafone, An Post Mobile uses Vodafone. Germany: congstar uses Telekom. France: Sosh uses Orange, RED by SFR uses SFR, B&You uses Bouygues Telecom. Spain: Digi uses Movistar. Italy: Very Mobile uses WindTre. Netherlands: Simyo uses KPN. We only list a smaller network when its host is clearly sourced. We show the host network's result unless we have a specific one, and we flag that it can differ.
Prices and where to buy
UK prices come from the maker's UK shop or a UK network's shop on the day we checked. Network Pay as you go prices include the first month's plan, and we say so. Euro prices come from the maker's own shops in the eurozone (for example HMD's German, French, Spanish, Italian and Irish shops) on the day we checked. Where we couldn't find a real price, we show a typical price or convert the maker's price at the European Central Bank reference rate, and mark it "approximate". Phones bought from abroad may add import VAT or duty. Buy buttons are plain links to the maker or network. Right now none of them earn us anything.
Keeping it fresh
Every phone and pairing has a "last checked" date. Last full check: 23 October 2026. You can download the whole dataset.
Who runs this, honestly
Plaindial is a small independent project, not a company with a test lab. We don't have every phone and every SIM on a desk. We gather published facts with the help of automated tools, check each one against the source we link, and mark anything we can't verify as unknown. Network plans change, and we will sometimes be wrong or out of date. If you spot a mistake, tell us and we'll fix it.
We're not connected to any network or phone maker, there are no ads, and no one pays to be listed. How we make money (right now: we don't).
