Dumbphones that work in the UK
We check 61 simple phones against 4 networks in the UK. 12 work on at least one network, and 42 more work with caveats. Every result links to its reason and sources.
The short version
- Three has no 2G, so a phone must have 4G Calling (VoLTE) that works on Three. Check Three's own device list.
- EE, Vodafone and O2 still run 2G, so most phones can still call, but over 2G. That ends from 2029 (EE, O2) and spring 2030 (Vodafone).
- "Supports VoLTE" on a spec sheet isn't enough. Each network has to allow that phone.
2G and 3G switch-off dates
| Network | 3G | 2G |
|---|---|---|
| EE | Switched off (completed 2024) | Staying on for now; EE says it will start switching 2G off from May 2029 |
| Vodafone UK | Switched off | Staying on for now; VodafoneThree says Vodafone's 2G closes in spring 2030 |
| O2 | Switched off (completed 2025/26) | Staying on for now; O2 plans to begin switching 2G off from 2029 |
| Three | Switched off (November 2025) | Three has never had a 2G network, so calls need 4G Calling (VoLTE) |
From each network's own pages and the regulator. Checked 22 Oct 2026.
