Dumbphones that work in France
We check 61 simple phones against 4 networks in France. 11 work on at least one network, and 33 more work with caveats. Every result links to its reason and sources.
The short version
- 2G is being switched off right now. Orange (and Free, which uses Orange's 2G) switched it off across mainland France in waves ending on 20 October 2026; only official no-coverage "white zones" keep it until 1–15 December. SFR switches it off in big cities and the Paris region from 15 to 30 November 2026, then everywhere from 1 to 15 December. Bouygues Telecom switches it off on 15 November in Brest, Guipavas, Nancy and Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy, then everywhere from 1 to 15 December 2026.
- A 2G-only phone will stop working. A 4G phone without 4G Calling on your network falls back to 3G, which lasts until the end of 2028 (Orange and SFR) or the end of 2029 (Bouygues). Free hasn't set a 3G date.
- "Supports VoLTE" on a spec sheet isn't enough. Each network has to allow that phone.
